Design Patent Coverage
Design patents protect only the ornamental features of a product or good. Design patents do not protect the function or utility of a product or good. As an example, if you invented the fork, a utility application would be needed to protect how the fork works, how it is made, and what it does. If you invented the handle of a fork having a shell shape design, a design patent would cover the shell shape design and not the fork itself.
